The trek from Jesuit

My Freshman year I played football. One week we had a by-week and 4 of my friends and I decided to go to the Jesuit football game to see some of our old friends. We made this decision without thinking it all the way through and ended up going without a ride back home. After the game we finally realized this and it was already too late to ask someone for a ride because everyone had left. I'm not sure why but we also decided that it would be a bad idea to call my friends mom and tell her we went to the game and needed a ride home. after about half an hour of thinking about what to do we decided it would just be best to walk back to his house. His house was about 9 miles away. That doesn't sound like a long walk but at 11:30 at night in dallas as Freshmen it was petrifying. No one knew the way home so we looked it up on google maps. Google maps decided to take us either on the tollway or a different route which was about 15 miles long. I told everyone that I thought I knew the way home and at first no one would trust me but finally I convinced them to let me lead the way home. Eventually after about an hour and a half of walking we made it home safe and sound. After safely getting everyone home I had improved the relationships of my friends because they trusted me a lot more after that. I rose up at that time and showed that I could lead people and lead them the right way.

  2. Hey Patrick!
It shows that you are a true leader that you were able to step up with confidence and tell everyone that they could trust you. It also shows that you were a true leader that you could keep your cool and guide the rest everyone else. You were not scared to be in control of everyone and that is a quality of a good leader. Also, It is always a great accomplishment when your relationships with your friends are improved and you know that they will always have faith in you. They will never doubt you again and you will never doubt yourself again either!

  3. patrick this sounds like a pretty adventerous night. i bet you were really proud of youself for finding the way home and getting all your friends home safely. your group probably would have been lost with out someone like you to step up and take charge. it takes guts to tell a groupd of your peers that they can trust in you and it pays off in the end if you pull thourgh the way you did.

  4. Ah, freshman! I wonder sometimes what they are thinking (or not thinking). For example, why would someone not have just called their parents to grab a ride? An older sibling? Too easy!
Anyway, in the end, it did leave you exeriencing the reality we discussed last week. Leadership is all around. It is not only in titled roles or when leading a large group; we can see it in one-to-one relationships and among small groups of friends.
Here, you led the group in problem-solving; helped identify a solution; and assure everyone that it would work out, even if you might have had some doubts yourself. Keep these realities in mind as we move forward with the class.
